I just got back from Kokopo the other day and was about to update my blog with my latest food finds there. Unfortunately, the power was knocked out in my flat that night due to the recent strong winds that Port Moresby has been experiencing.
Well the following day, I went about my business and was about to attend a meeting at Konedobu when the sky opened up and released a river on the city's unsuspecting population. I have never experienced such heavy rains in all the years I have been here. I have to say that the rains this year have been heavy and the winds really strong.
I was driving from Hohola going through Poreporena freeway when the rains fell. I had to slow down to a snail's pace as all the cars in front of me and at my back turned on their lights as well as their hazard lights. By the time I reached the crest of Poreporena, I could only see about 30-50 metres ahead. I continued on to Konedobu but had to turn back as it was already flooded to the point where I couldn't see the curb.
I ended up sipping coffee at Harbour City as I couldn't go anywhere anymore. I waited until the rain got lighter. The thing was, a lot of the roads got flooded and I had to wait for about an hour for the water to recede enough for me to cross.
Here are some photos of the deluge:
Needless to say, I was again without power that night along with a good portion of the city's population. Oh well... such is life.
